2008 Community Service Projects

Project Poppa Bear

The AllStars Children's Church partnered with Zeta Delta Home School Honor Society during March of 2008 in a service project called "Project Poppa Bear". Project Poppa Bear was started by an Air Force sergeant stationed at the 332 Expeditionary Medical Group field hospital at Balad Air Base, Iraq. When he arrived at Balad, his heart went out to the many Iraqi children who were brought in to be treated for injuries suffered as a result of the war.  In speaking to his wife about it, she suggested that he give them a teddy bear, and that was the beginning of Project Poppa Bear.

This project was such a huge success for both Zeta Delta and AllStars, as in less than 4 weeks we collected over 300 bears and other stuffed animals.  This made it possible to ship bears not only to the 332nd EMDG, but also to US military units in other areas of Iraq and Afghanistan.  These units will take bears with them when they go out on patrol and hand them out to the local children in the communities.  This will help foster even greater relations between the US troops and the local people they are protecting.
